Students
have the opportunity to study stringed instruments in grades fifth
and sixth grades, under the direction of Mrs. Lubaroff. Strings
students are held to high standards of musicianship and citizenship,
as they explore tone production, music reading, and ensemble
performance.
Students are also challenged to critically listen as they develop
intonation and coordination.
Our district's instrumental programs receive the highest honors -
primarily due to the solid foundation achieved in the elementary
setting.

Band classes are available to
fifth and sixth grade students,
under the direction of Mr. Harvey, 2008
"Excellence in Teaching"
award recipient. Woodwind, brass, and percussion
students apply instrumental techniques in musical performance. The
students' goal is to develop a correct embouchure, playing position, mature intonation, and
musicianship in preparation for advanced, secondary level ensembles.

General
music classes, under the direction of Mr. Foreman,
recipient of both district-wide
"Learning for
Life" and "Excellence
in Teaching" awards, include instruction in music theory, performance,
history, and appreciation. The centerpiece of Highland Park's
general music program is the Yamaha "Music In Education"
Keyboard Lab, a technology driven program, supplemented with Orff
instruction, internet activities, technology assisted learning
software, whiteboard technology, & vocal music. When these
instructional components are effectively combined, they provide a well-balanced, musical experience for students in
kindergarten through sixth grade.
